Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2021

May 20, 2021

Today at Guide Dogs, we’re celebrating Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD)! The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about digital access and inclusion.

At Guide Dogs, accessibility is at the heart of everything we do to ensure that our print and digital content can be enjoyed by everyone.

Accessibility was front and centre for the recent launch of our new brand and rollout of five new state websites earlier this year. Every colour, shape, image and graphic was a carefully considered choice, designed after extensive consultation with our Clients – people with low vision or blindness – to make our brand much more accessible, and to ensure our websites complied with WCAG 2.1 Accessibility standards (Level AAA).

Accessibility also extends to the development of our visual content. Guide Dogs’ video content includes an Audio Description (AD) which is the auditory narration of the non-verbal elements of a program to describe visual elements such actions, settings and more. In addition, each post on our Guide Dogs Australia social media channels is accompanied by a written description of the image or video, which can be read by a screen reader.

This Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we wanted to highlight some top tips to help make your digital content accessible for people with low vision or blindness.
