Employment Tip 3: The importance of volunteering

March 11, 2025

Voluntary work is a fantastic way to:

  • Keep a resume populated with current dates.
  • Build new skills, learnt on the voluntary job.
  • Be exposed to new potential employers.
  • Be exposed to a variety of work settings, it you are unsure of your direction.
  • Build your tolerance to working a full day, particularly if you are coming back to work after a long absence.

The good thing about voluntary work is you can tailor it to your interests and your availability. Whether it’s a few hours a week or once a month, there are many opportunities to fit your lifestyle. If you can, tailor volunteer work around your career path, and grow your network of contacts.

You never know, a contact you meet volunteering could open doors for you as a referee or notify you of a potential job before it’s advertised.

Above all, your efforts may lead into paid employment, as watching someone work, is the best way for a recruiter to see work potential.

Guide Dogs Victoria also offers volunteer opportunities to individuals who are blind or low vision.  To discuss these options further, please speak with our Mary Heath our Volunteer Program Officer on 1800 804 805 or express your interest directly via our online form
