Guide Dogs Victoria’s (GDV) state-of-the-art sensory campus in Kew is setting a new benchmark for accessibility and independence. With our newly redesigned residential training facilities, we are proud to launch our immersive, tailored programs for individuals with low vision or blindness.

Whether refreshing long cane skills or beginning a life-changing partnership with a Guide Dog, our programs provide Clients of all ages and vision levels unmatched opportunities for skill development in a supportive environment. Example programs held on our campus include:

Refining long cane skills

Clients can take advantage of our two-day residential Long Cane Refresher Program, designed for individuals ready to enhance or further build on their mobility techniques. Led by expert Orientation and Mobility Specialists (O&Ms), participants can refine their cane use and gain confidence navigating everyday environments, such as road crossings, stairways and communal spaces.

The program includes:

  • Exploration of long cane options and tips to suit individual needs.
  • Practical exercises to improve efficiency and safety.
  • Opportunities for group discussions and social connection during downtime in our modern, fully accessible accommodation.

Silvana, a recent participant, described her experience as transformative:

“After experiencing significant vision loss, I was anxious about rebuilding my confidence. The support here is incredible, and in just a short time, I’ve already regained key skills and independence.”

Guide Dog Handler training

For Clients matched with a new Guide Dog, our residential Guide Dog Handler Training Program offers an immersive environment for Handlers and dogs to bond and develop skills together with access to 24-hour support. Participants stay in private, premium hotel-style rooms with direct access to outdoor courtyards to toilet their dogs.

Julie, a Guide Dog Handler from Wangaratta, highlighted the importance of training at the sensory campus:

“Living on a large farm, I need to navigate paddocks, stables, and more. Training here has given me the confidence and skills to handle any environment. The facilities and support staff are incredible – it feels like home.”

Similarly, Jen, another participant, praised the tailored training approach:

“This environment is invaluable. The one-on-one support, communal spaces, and ability to connect with other Clients have made this experience truly life-changing.”

Programs for individuals of all ages

In addition to our dedicated residential programs, Clients of any age have opportunities to participate in on-site workshops, focused day programs, weeklong intensive skill development, children’s camps and more.

Throughout our Campus redevelopment, these programs were paused, and in September 2024 we were thrilled to finally welcome Clients back to Kew for a three-day Secondary School Children’s Camp. Among different activities designed to promote independence and skill development, participants planned a meal and created a shopping list, and collaborating as teams they shopped for ingredients and returned to prepare their own dinner together, incorporating important life skills into their culinary experience.

Contributing to the success of this experience is GDV’s accessible training kitchen, featuring exemplary examples of accessibility with tactile markings on appliances, an electric adjustable sink in the island bench, adjustable cooktop and overhead cabinets that lower for easy access.

That’s just one example of the engaging and empowering activities available to Clients at GDV. School holiday camp programs for kids are run three times a year at GDV for children of all ages.

The Guide Dogs difference

What sets our sensory Campus apart is its thoughtful design and comprehensive support. Featuring tactile markers on the floor and railings, accessible appliances, and wayfinding lighting – our Campus is completely tailored to the needs of the low vision and blind community. Beyond the physical environment, the caring and knowledgeable staff ensure every Client feels supported and empowered throughout their program.

Jen reflected on her time here:

“This isn’t just training; it’s preparation for life. The environment, staff, and focus on individual needs make all the difference.”

Why train at our Campus?

Well, because you can! Training on-campus provides an opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in a program while being away from many of life’s distractions, receive multi-disciplinary support, meet new people and be supported through the entire experience.

Whether refreshing or building mobility skills, or embarking on a life-changing partnership with a new Guide Dog, our sensory Campus offers a supportive, welcoming space where Clients can connect with like-minded others while achieving their goals.
