Meet Maurice

“I have been working in education for 20 plus years with seven of those years involving Therapy Dogs. My name is Matthew Boundy, and I am very lucky to have had Maurice as a part of my teaching toolkit to support both students and teachers to be the best they can possibly be.

After reaching out to Guide Dogs Victoria, we were fortunate to be matched up with Therapy Dog Maurice to work in schools with me. Since being welcomed into our family, Maurice has adjusted to school life with ease. His calm nature and quiet disposition makes him the perfect companion in the schoolyard and classroom.

He welcomes students to school every morning and regularly visits classrooms where he gravitates to students who need emotional support. He is a great educational tool for students who are anxious around large animals, as with a little training and reassurance, they are able to overcome their fears and pat him or even take him for walks.

Staff too benefit from time with him as he is a valued participant in staff meetings where they pat and spend time with him after a long day of teaching.

I can’t imagine my role now as Deputy Principal without the support of a Therapy Dog. They help provide such a genuine connection between students, parents and myself and help provide a sense of safety and security in an ever-changing world. My thanks go out to Guide Dogs Victoria and their Therapy Dog program for their ongoing support and vision.”
