Pup Stars: Tim & Tam
Our Puppy Pals got very creative when naming this litter! As part of the ‘Cake & Biscuit Litter’ of seven pups – Tim and Tam have three brothers (Kingstone, Marble and Anzac) and two sisters (Biscoff and Florentine).
Now six months old, Tim is already proving to be something truly special with a cuddly nature, a sharp mind, and endless enthusiasm. Tam is a calm, playful and loving girl who adores cuddles – especially on someone’s lap.
Both have been busy refining their walking skills and practising calm behaviour and recall. A recent highlight has been the introduction of a gentle leader – it’s made a world of difference during their walks. Tim and Tam are now strolling beautifully beside their puppy raisers earning plenty of compliments along the way.
Thanks to our Puppy Pals’ ongoing support, pups like Tim and Tam are building the skills and confidence that will one day change someone’s life forever.
Welcome
Meet the team
Behind every confident Guide Dog team is a dedicated instructor. Meet Laura Davidson, one of our passionate Mobility Instructors.
Laura opens up about her journey, how she trains dogs, supports clients, and witnesses the incredible transformations donors help create every day.
“There is not a day that goes by that something happens that reminds me why I am so lucky to do this job.”
- Q. How would you describe your role as a Mobility Instructor?
My role is to prepare dogs for working with a client, match clients with a suitable dog, and complete class training once the partnership begins. We also provide ongoing support for clients and complete Guide Dog assessments for people beginning their journey. - Q. What does a typical workday look like for you?
No two days are the same. Most of our time is spent with clients, whether that is class training, routine follow up visits or aftercare visits to support clients navigate any challenges.
- Q. What skills or behaviours do you focus on when preparing a dog for client matching?
We prepare our dogs through blindfold and simulation walks and by introducing them to varied environments. After matching, we personalise their training to the client’s needs.Recently, I worked with a dog whose handler uses a support cane and was unable to support the dog with any hand signals – so I completed all walks using a cane myself and helped the dog learn to respond to vocal cues instead. - Q. Matching a Guide Dog with a client is such an important decision. What factors do you consider ensuring a good fit?
Walking speed, handling ability, lifestyle, and the environments a client moves through. - Q. What are some of the most rewarding parts of your job?
Watching the life changing effects our dogs and services have on our clients, and their independent mobility is incredibly special. There is truly no better feeling than being part of that journey and seeing the bond begin to form.
It’s a privilege to witness these partnerships form – and it’s only possible because of the community that stands behind every client and every dog.
Your Kindness Encourages our Dog Team!
Hundreds of heartwarming and kind messages were received over Christmas and displayed throughout our kennels and nursery – spreading so much cheer and
encouraging our dog teams and our puppies too!
A special thank you to each of you who sent these through!
With more than 2,700 supporters giving and nearly $300,000 raised, your generosity is already helping train, care for and match the next generation of life changing Guide Dogs.
Here are some fun photos we took of the pups wearing some of these beautiful messages we received.
A Splash of Every Colour
Say Hello to Our Rainbow Litter!
On 7 January, we proudly welcomed a brand‑new litter from Zammy and Gnocchi, and these adorable pups have already captured every heart
in the nursery.
This delightful group features three yellow males, two black males, one chocolate male and one chocolate female, each settling in beautifully.
Zammy is proving to be a doting mum – she absolutely adores her new little bubbas and cares for them with so much love.
While we don’t want to single out any pups, this litter does include something truly remarkable: two chocolate puppies.
This sweet and unusual “Rainbow Litter” marks a joyful start to the year and reminds us just how special every new Guide Dog journey is. We can’t wait to watch these pups grow, learn, and eventually begin their life‑changing training.
Every litter represents hope. This one also carries a little extra magic.
CLIENT SPOTLIGHT
Brent’s Story of Independence
At 54, Brent has built a life defined by resilience and routine, with a career spanning more than 30 years. Living with vision impairment since birth, he has long relied on tools and training to stay independent.
His partnership with his Guide Dog Zosh, together with technology and training from Guide Dogs Victoria, has given him fresh confidence in daily life.
A turning point came during orientation and mobility training when an instructor encouraged Brent to trial different cane options.
“For the first time I realised I had choices; it wasn’t one model for everyone. I chose a yellow cane because it stood out more, and that small decision shifted my confidence.”
That moment of choice was bigger than a colour swap, it reframed mobility as something he could tailor.
With that mindset, Brent began seeking other tools he could customise, especially technology.
With support from Guide Dogs Victoria, he learned to use an iPhone, explored GPS navigation, and trialled smart glasses.
“Technology opens up so many opportunities, I’m always keen to learn what’s next,” he says.
The most profound change has been working with Zosh, a dog matched to his fast pace and active lifestyle.
“The bond is stronger when you train at home” Brent explains.
“During COVID, that’s how I trained with Zosh, and it made all the difference.”
Together, they support Brent’s daily commute, his work, and his independence. While his routine hasn’t changed much, Brent’s outlook has. Once sceptical of services and dismissive of cane users, he now champions a mix of tools, from canes and dogs to the latest tech. “I’ve seen the difference these services make, not only for me, but for others I’ve referred.”
For Brent, Guide Dogs Victoria hasn’t been about changing his life completely, it has been about strengthening the skills, technology, and partnerships that allow him to keep living the life he chooses.
Because of your support, Brent doesn’t just move through his world – he moves through it with confidence, choice and control.
School Holiday Program
Thanks to community support, our School Holiday Program is creating brighter, more inclusive school breaks for young Victorians.
School holidays at Guide Dogs Victoria are getting brighter, busier, and a whole lot more fun thanks to our School Holiday Program, a special experience designed to engage primary school‑aged children and help them learn about the world of Guide Dogs in an exciting, hands‑on way. The program blends education, play, compassion and curiosity, encouraging children to build awareness of Guide Dogs’ work and what it means to be a responsible pet owner. It’s a day that inspires kindness, empathy and a deeper understanding of accessibility.
Each session hosts up to 24 children, creating a supportive environment where young learners can explore and ask questions at their own pace. With a combination of structured activities and fun discoveries, participants enjoy a full and memorable day.
What’s Included in the Program
Children take part in a variety of engaging activities, including:
- A special sneak peek inside our puppy nursery
- Watching our incredible Guide Dogs show off their skills with our expert trainers
- Experiencing what it’s like to have low vision through blindfold walks and low vision goggles
- Spending time with our friendly Ambassador Dogs
- Meeting puppies and their volunteer raisers
- Becoming a Junior Vet attendant for part of the day
These experiences not only spark joy, but they also help children develop a deeper understanding of the vital role Guide Dogs play and the importance of inclusive communities.
It’s a day full of wagging tails, wide smiles, and learning that lasts long after the holidays end.
When Is the Next Program?
Our School Holiday Program will run every school holiday, so keep an eye out on our socials for the next dates! Here is some feedback from participants:
“Yesterday my grandchildren had the BEST day and rang me from their dad’s car bubbling over with everything they had done.
Thank you to everyone involved. The boys are very involved with our puppy raising and absolutely loved their day at GDV. Well done everyone – kids are pretty severe critics and you nailed it.” – Grandmother of attendee

LEGO® Puppy Launch Event
Last month, the LEGO® Store at Melbourne Central was buzzing with excitement as our cuddly Ambassador Dogs made a special appearance to celebrate the launch of the new LEGO Puppy set.
Supporters, families, and dog‑loving shoppers stopped by throughout the morning to meet the pups, chat with our friendly team, and soak up
the joyful atmosphere.
The star of the day was the adorable LEGO Puppy itself, a fully posable figurine that can wag its tail, lift a paw, tilt its head, and even stick out its tiny pink tongue. With limited stock available, many visitors were eager to secure their own collectible and join in the fun. Most importantly, the event raised meaningful support for our work.
A huge thank‑you to everyone who came along, said hello, and shared their enthusiasm.
Events like this not only spread joy but also help create life‑changing opportunities for the people we support and for the pups who will one day become their trusted companions.
Turn Your Containers into Confident Canines

Every eligible bottle, can, or carton becomes a direct donation that supports people who are blind or have low vision. With more than 100 puppies expected this year, every 10 cent refund adds up, whether it’s one container or a thousand making a meaningful difference for future Guide Dogs.
It’s one of the simplest ways to support Guide Dogs, and every 10 cents adds up to real training hours, real meals, real equipment.

Run Melbourne
Sunday 19th July
Run for a Purpose, Run for GDV! Are you an avid runner, walker or somewhere
in between? Or perhaps you have set a New Year’s resolution to get into fitness?
Guide Dogs Victoria has teamed up with Run Melbourne so you can make every step matter.
So put on your running shoes and join GDV’s Individual Giving Manager, Andy Weston, in either the iconic half marathon, the 10km, or the 5.5km, and raise vital funds for GDV.
For people who are blind or have low vision, everyday tasks many of us take for granted, like walking to the supermarket or catching public transport, can feel as challenging as a half marathon.
By running for Guide Dogs Victoria in Run Melbourne 2026, you’re helping break down those barriers and create life changing independence.

ASK ALEX
Handling Distractions Like a Pro
The training methods below are the same principles your support helps deliver every day.
Guide Dog puppies grow up in a world full of distractions, dogs, birds, cats, children, café smells, and friendly strangers.
Our aim isn’t to stop them noticing these things; it’s to teach them to notice, stay calm, and move on.
The same training principles we use for future Guide Dogs can also help pet dogs at home. Two simple but powerful tools make the biggest difference: the 3 Ds (Distance, Duration, Distraction) and the Engage/Disengage game.
The 3 Ds in Action
When a puppy struggles, one (or more) of the 3 Ds is too high.
- Distance: How close is your puppy to the distraction?
- Duration: How long are they expected to stay calm?
- Distraction: How exciting or intense is the trigger?
If one D increases, another should decrease.
A busy food court? Increase distance and reduce duration.
A barking puppy nearby? Create more space than you would with a calm, older dog.
Distance is often the most powerful adjustment. Space gives puppies room to think instead of reacting. Watch their body language: if their ears lift, head heightens or gaze locks on, you’re at the ideal working distance. Any closer may lead to pulling or lunging.
Bringing It Together
The 3 Ds set the stage, Engage/Disengage is the skill you teach within that stage.
In other words, you adjust distance, duration and distraction first, so your puppy is capable of learning. Then you use Engage/Disengage to reinforce calm decision making.
If your puppy can’t disengage, that’s not disobedience, it’s feedback. One of the 3 Ds needs adjusting. Create more space, shorten the exposure, or reduce the intensity. Then try again.
The Engage/Disengage Game
- Let your puppy look at the distraction.
- The moment they look away, mark “YES!” and reward.
- If they don’t disengage, gently call their name, then reward when they turn.
- If excitement builds, increase distance and try again.
- If you can’t create space, calmly hand‑feed until the distraction passes. This is management, not training.

Designing Inclusion, Together
Hallmark x Guide Dogs: Small cards making a big impact for people who are blind or have low vision.
For most of us, sending our loved ones a greeting card is a small but thoughtful gesture that connects us, celebrating milestones and showing we care. For people with low vision or blindness, this practice has often been out of reach.
Through our national partnership with Hallmark Australia, that’s changing. Together, we’ve created a range of accessible greeting cards now available in stores across the country, bringing the joy of giving and receiving cards within everyone’s reach.
The twelve-card collection was co-designed with people who are blind or have low vision, featuring high-contrast colours, bold modern designs, braille messages, tactile surfaces, and clear, easy-to-read text.
These thoughtful details remove barriers, allowing our clients and community to take part in life’s meaningful moments – birthdays, thank you’s, celebrations, or simply letting someone know they are cared for.
“Opening a card might seem small to most, but for someone living with blindness, it highlights how often the world isn’t designed for us,” says Karlee Symonds, a Guide Dogs Client.
“Accessible greeting cards mean my community can share in life’s simple joys just like anyone else, and that our milestones matter too.”
Explore the range today.
Thanks to our partnership with Hallmark, bright, accessible greeting cards are now available in stores across Australia, allowing everyone to celebrate life’s special moments.
