National Volunteer Week 2020

May 21, 2020

This week is National Volunteer Week and this year’s theme is “Changing Communities. Changing Lives.” We feel this is very fitting for the work our Guide Dogs volunteers do as Guide Dogs really is a community and our volunteers are the backbone of this community.

At Guide Dogs Victoria we are so fortunate to have 601 registered volunteers assisting us with everything from our kennels, puppy raising, temp caring, administration, events, puppy classes, puppy nurturing, dog walking, maintenance, gardening – the list is endless!

Over the past year, our volunteers have volunteered 1,300 hours on site and over 1.6 million hours through puppy raising. This is a truly incredible achievement and there are no words to express how grateful the entire Guide Dogs community is for the support of our amazing volunteers.

The can-do attitude that we see displayed daily among our volunteers is outstanding and inspiring – there is no task too big or too small. There is no doubt that we would not be able to achieve the amazing things we do for Clients and their families without our wonderful volunteers.

In previous years, we would have scheduled a number of events across the week to bring our staff and volunteers together and celebrate the incredible role our volunteers play as part of the Guide Dog community.

As this isn’t possible this year, we have instead organised a number of special virtual celebrations for our volunteers to let them know how much we all appreciate the incredible work they do the whole year round. This includes a series of social posts acknowledging their tireless efforts so keep an eye on Guide Dogs Australia’s social media channels for those – and feel free to leave a lovely comment to thank our outstanding volunteers during National Volunteer Week 2020!
