About the event

Promotional banner for a Guide Dogs "First Steps to School" event. On the left, the text reads: "Join us for... First Steps to School! Build the confidence, independence and practical skills they need to make a positive and successful transition to school." Event details below state: "10am–1pm, Thursday 1 October, Guide Dogs Victoria Kew Campus, 2–6 Chandler Highway, Kew VIC 3101." On the right, a young student with white-blonde hair in a ponytail and glasses concentrates on writing in a workbook at a classroom table, with other students blurred in the background. The Guide Dogs logo appears at the top left, with the organisation's black chevron graphic at the bottom.

Starting school is a big milestone for every child and family. First Steps to School! is a welcoming day program designed to help children with low vision or blindness build the confidence, independence and practical skills they need to make a positive and successful transition to school.

Delivered by the Guide Dogs Victoria Early Childhood Team, this engaging and supportive program provides children with opportunities to practice the everyday routines they’ll experience at school through hands-on activities, guided learning and play in a safe, encouraging environment.

Throughout the day, children will develop skills in:

  • Self-care and personal independence
  • Packing school bags and managing lunchboxes
  • Classroom routines and organisation
  • Safe travel, orientation and environmental awareness
  • Fine motor and functional classroom skills
  • Sensory regulation strategies
  • Communication, social interaction and cooperative play
  • Problem-solving, turn-taking and self-advocacy
  • Classroom transitions and listening skills

While children are participating in activities, parents and carers will receive practical information and strategies to support their child’s independence at home and prepare for the transition to school with confidence. The Guide Dogs Victoria Early Childhood Team will also provide guidance on the next steps for your child’s journey, including the supports available through the Department of Education and Guide Dogs Victoria, and what school life may look like during those important first weeks and beyond.

Families will also hear real-life stories and case study examples from previous Guide Dogs Victoria clients, offering reassurance, practical insights and the opportunity to see how children with low vision or blindness can thrive in their school communities with the right supports in place.

We recognise that preparing for school is a journey for the whole family. Parents, siblings, grandparents, carers and other support people are warmly invited to attend and be part of the day as we work together to help your child step into school with confidence.
